Determined to perch

On the porch, drenched mocking bird

Shivers off spring rain.

29 Scaup float,

Vanguard of the migration,

Bills tucked under wings

Something deep shifted:

Once dark with ducks & geese, now

Lake gulls screech alone.

Minor official,

Great American Empire,

Now heron watching.

13 loons fishing

Amidst whitecaps & seagulls -

Loons dive, seagulls swirl.

Empty nesting box

Were the Ospreys blown away?

Violent thunder storm

On my neighbor’s dock,

Vulture Guild bleakly perches:

Not much died today.

When I was a child

The night was loud and bright with

Whippoorwills, fireflies.

Birds in a frenzy

But four stuffed crows stand in line

Midst the mayfly hatch

Where blue herons perch

Mornings on my neighbor’s dock

Now a king fisher

(via Twitter / John Hicks)

Massed purple martins

Swirl round invisible bugs

Like a smoke cyclone

Osprey flying wild

Fishing the edge of thunder

Eyes piercing whitecaps

On the black mailbox

Cardinal perches, then darts

Too quick for photos

This Spring’s first osprey

Flying high west towards sunset

Returned from Brazil

The purple martins

Fly again at Lake Murray

Swift bugs flee in vain
