29 Scaup float,

Vanguard of the migration,

Bills tucked under wings

Something deep shifted:

Once dark with ducks & geese, now

Lake gulls screech alone.

Stealing the canoe;

Now for the flawless escape -

Paddling in moonlight.

Empty winter lake:

One sail, healed by the stiff gale,

Captures my desire.

13 loons fishing

Amidst whitecaps & seagulls -

Loons dive, seagulls swirl.

Empty nesting box

Were the Ospreys blown away?

Violent thunder storm

On my neighbor’s dock,

Vulture Guild bleakly perches:

Not much died today.

Massed purple martins

Swirl round invisible bugs

Like a smoke cyclone

One drake and nine ducks

Fidget on a wood pier’s end:

Twenty mallard eyes.

Blue Heron squawks away.

“I spooked your competition.”

Rowing Rock Island

Whistling so the dogs will know

Just where I’m paddling

While two dogs search the island

I’m the king of Lake Murray

With two wet old dogs
